Bell Nunnally Labor and Employment Partners Jay Wallace and Sydnie Shimkus on Texas Lawbook Explore AI’s Impact on the Workplace

Bell Nunnally partners Jay M. Wallace and Sydnie A. Shimkus authored The Texas Lawbook article, “AI Is Changing Workforce Dynamics – Here’s How the DOL and NLRB Are Responding.” The article examines how employers are increasingly turning to generative artificial intelligence (AI) to cut costs, reshape job roles and shift workplace dynamics – and how federal regulators are beginning to respond.

Wallace and Shimkus explain how the early post-pandemic leverage held by employees is eroding, in large part due to the swift adoption of AI. “AI does not request a pay increase or time off, and it won’t try to organize a union or talk back to managers,” they write, highlighting AI’s appeal to business leaders focused on efficiency.

The pair also emphasize that companies should not overlook the long-term impact of relying too heavily on technology: “At many levels, organizations cannot replace the human inspiration that makes what once seemed impossible, possible.” The piece outlines recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor and explores how unions and the National Labor Relations Board are working to protect workers in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Wallace and Shimkus close by noting that, while the regulatory framework is still catching up, leadership must balance innovation with human input, “Contrary to some doomsayers, robots will not inherit the earth.”
